Form Instructions

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway. Overdrafts will be determined based on the available balance in your checking account at the time a check or item is presented. Your available balance may be lower than your actual balance due to funds held for debit card transactions you have authorized and deposited checks held pursuant to our funds availability policy. If the available balance in your account is less than the transaction amount of the check or item presented, the item will be considered an overdraft and may be returned or declined.
We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways:

  1. We have standard overdraft practices that come with your account. This notice explains our standard overdraft practices, which are also set forth in our Membership and Account Agreement.
  2. We also offer overdraft protection plans, such as a link to a savings account, to a Visa account and to a line of credit, which may be less expensive than our Courtesy Pay standard overdraft practices. Learn more about our overdraft coverage plans.


If you do not qualify or opt-out of Courtesy pay and there are insufficient funds, we will return your item.

We do authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us not to:

  • Debit card & point of sale transactions
  • Checks drawn against your checking and other transactions made using your checking account number
  • Recurring automatic bill payments authorized against your debit card
  • ACH transactions

The Credit Union pays overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be returned or declined.

We do not authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us to (Opt-in):

  • ATM Transactions
  • Debit Card Transactions

Yes, if you have not been previously qualified for Courtesy Pay, first opt in to Courtesy Pay (option #1) and then opt in to the Debit Card option (option #2) to ensure your everyday debit-card transactions receive the same overdraft coverage as your checks and other items.

  • There is no charge each time we transfer from your savings account to cover an item(s).
  • We will charge you a Courtesy Pay fee of $15.00 each time we pay an overdraft (Courtesy Pay).
  • We limit the total fees for overdrawing your account to $45 per day.
  • There is NO fee to keep the overdraft protection service on your account.
  • There is NO fee if you never use it.

If you want us to authorize and pay overdrafts on ATM and everyday debit card transactions on your checking account, you must opt-in by using one of the following methods:

  • Complete our Courtesy Pay Request form in the Forms area of Online Banking
  • Complete the form and fax (408-543-5203) or mail to Star One Credit Union, PO Box 3643, CA 94088-3643
  • Complete and deliver the form to one of our branches
  • Call us

Your Options

Please note that you may reinstate or revoke your opt-in decision at any time.


#1. Opt in to Courtesy Pay (for non-debit-card transactions)

I authorize Star One to pay overdrafts on checks, bill payments and ACH transactions drawn on my account. This opt-in request covers the Star One Checking Accounts as shown below.

#2. Opt in to everyday debit-card overdrafts

I authorize Star One to pay overdrafts on everyday Debit Card transactions drawn on my account. This opt-in request covers all my Star One Checking Accounts as shown below.


#3. Opt out of Courtesy Pay and everyday debit-card overdrafts

I do not authorize Star One to pay overdrafts on checks, bill payments, ACH transactions and everyday debit card transactions that are drawn on my account. This opt-out request covers all my Star One Checking Accounts as listed below.
