Form Instructions

An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but as a service to you we pay it anyway. We can cover your overdrafts in two different ways.

  1. If you do not qualify or opt-out of Courtesy Pay, we will return your item if there are insufficient funds.
  2. We have standard overdraft practices that come with your account. This notice explains our standard overdraft practices, which are also set forth in our Membership and Account Agreement.
  3. We also have other available overdraft coverage, such as a link to a savings account, to a Visa account and to a line of credit, which are less expensive than our Courtesy Pay overdraft practices. Learn more about our overdraft coverage plans.

We authorize and pay overdrafts for the following types of transactions unless you ask us not to:

  • Debit card & point of sale transactions
  • Checks drawn against your checking
  • Automatic bill payments
  • ACH transactions

We may pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee that we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be returned or declined.

Yes, if you have not been previously qualified for Courtesy Pay, first opt in to Courtesy Pay (#1 below) and then opt in to the Debit Card option (#2 below) to ensure your every day debit card transactions receive the same overdraft coverage as your checks and other items.

Under our standard overdraft practices:

  • There is no charge each time we transfer from your savings account to cover an item(s).
  • We will charge you a fee of $15.00 each time we overdraft (Courtesy Pay) your account to pay an item(s).
  • There is a limit of three item fees per day we can charge you for overdrawing your account.

Note: We do not authorize and pay overdrafts caused by everyday debit card transactions without an opt-in authorization.

Please tell us if you want to keep debit-card overdraft coverage on your checking account(s). To keep your Courtesy Pay for everyday debit-card transactions, you must opt in using one of the following methods:

  • Complete our Courtesy Pay Request form in the Forms area of Online Banking
  • Complete the form and fax (408-543-5203) or mail to Star One Credit Union, PO Box 3643, CA 94088-3643
  • Complete and deliver the form to one of our branches
  • Call us

#1. Opt in to Courtesy Pay (for non-debit-card transactions)

I authorize Star One to pay overdrafts on checks, bill payments and ACH transactions drawn on my account. This opt-in request covers the Star One Checking Accounts as shown below.

#2. Opt in to everyday debit-card overdrafts

I authorize Star One to pay overdrafts on everyday Debit Card transactions drawn on my account. This opt-in request covers all my Star One Checking Accounts as shown below.

#3. Opt out of Courtesy Pay

I do not authorize Star One to pay overdrafts on checks, bill payments, ACH transactions and everyday debit card transactions that are drawn on my account. This opt-out request covers all my Star One Checking Accounts as listed below.
